THE ART:-

The Bengal Patachitra is a visual and oral art tradition practised by the Patuas or Chitrakars of West Bengal.

The word 'Pata' comes from the Sanskrit word 'Patta', meaning cloth and ‘Chitra ‘refers to painting. In Patachitra stories are painted as frames on long scrolls and the Patuas who paint Patas, gradually unfurl them while presenting the story through their songs and the songs are known as Pater Gaan.

Patachitra is known for its bold colours, lines and strokes & the colours are natural derived from local sources like fruits and flowers. The Art represents themes like Mythological Tales, Historical & Contemporary Themes and Social Issues. The Bengal Patachitra is divided into some different aspects like Durga Pat, Chalchitra, Tribal Patachitra, Medinipur Patachitra and Kalighat Pattachitra.

THE ARTIST:-

Suman Chitrakar a 33-year young Patua from Daspur started painting Patachitra in 2004. He has learnt Patachitra from Maina Chitrakar and Joydeb Chitrakar who are his teachers. Suman carries the lineage of 'folk' artists who paint long scrolls & compose verses and is thus practicing Bengal Patachitra and Scroll Painting.

He creates figurative works and narrates beautiful stories through his art form. His artwork has been featured in 2 books - Bono Bibi of the Sundarbans & other on the life of Savitribai Phule published by Azim Premji University.

Suman Chitrakar participated in an inspirational exhibition 'Gods and Demons' in London and after a glorious week in London he conducted live demonstrations and workshops at the Museum of Edinburgh, Jorasanko, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Victoria Memorial & Indian Museum. He paints Bangla Pat, Santhal Pat, Kalighat Pat which he paints on Saree, Kurta, T-shirt, Umbrella, Kettle, etc.

Suman's wife Rupsona Chitrakar is also a patachitra artist – traditional scroll painter of West Bengal. She is the fifth generation in a family of Patuas who practice a unique folk art of painting-cum-storytelling through songs. She started painting at the age of six and learnt patachitra painting under the guidance of her father Bahadur Chitrakar and her grandmother Baharjan Chitrakar.
