Sold OutThe Tamak also known as Madol is a Santali Traditional Musical Instrument. It is known as Madol in the tribal region of West Bengal. It is a single-headed kettle drum and shaped like a large bowl. The head of the drum is usually cowhide and 14-18 inches in diameter. It is struck by the player with two sticks. The Tamak is thought to have special spiritual meaning and power.
The Santal believe that the tamak has special religious powers and it is often used for religious ceremonies and Santal festivals. The rhythm of this instrument often sets the basic metric/rhythmic pattern for Santal dances and is an essential instrument for traditional Santal music.
Tamaks are made in different sizes as per requirement. Some can only be lifted with two persons and some are carried in bullock cart. The bigger ones are used during Sendra or mass hunting. Small and medium sizes are drummed by a person with two drum sticks for dances like lagne, dong, baha, dahar and all other forms of dances.
