History of Indian jewellery is as old as the history of the country itself. Around 5000 years ago, the desire to adorn themselves aroused in people, leading to the origin of jewellery in India. Both women and men of the Indus valley Civilization used to decorate themselves with jewellery like necklaces, armlet, fillets and finger-rings. The common metals being used in the preparation of ornaments for the people of Indus valley Civilization were gold, copper, silver, ivory, and various other precious stones, shells, bones, etc.
Indian jewellery is unique in its design and workmanship. The Uniqueness of Indian Jewelry is associated with its significance and symbolism to many of the deities mentioned in the Vedas, Puranas and the Epics.
