Discover the many chapters of Delhi through this set of two fridge magnets celebrating the city's rich heritage and the iconic Red Fort.
The Red Fort | An Enduring Symbol of India
The Red Fort, or Lal Qila, was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1638. Its magnificent architecture includes the Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas and Rang Mahal. For nearly two centuries, it served as a centre of Mughal power.
The fort witnessed pivotal moments in Indian history, from Nadir Shah's invasion in 1739 and the changing powers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the First War of Independence in 1857 and the trials of Indian National Army officers in 1945–46.
On 15 August 1947, India's national flag was raised at the Lahori Gate. Since then, the Prime Minister has hoisted the tricolour from the Red Fort every Independence Day, making it one of India's most enduring national symbols.
