Origin of Yoga -

One of the oldest sciences in the world, Yoga originated in India. Yoga's origins can be traced to northern India over 5,000 years ago. The word yoga was first mentioned in ancient sacred texts called the Rig Veda.

The Atharva veda mentions `breath control’, but it is not possible to pin down exact dates because the Vedas were passed down orally. But much before this—2700BC—several seals depicting Yoga asanas were found in the Indus-Saraswati civilization. The main sources that provide information about Yoga and associated literature are available in the Vedas, Upanishads, Smritis, teachings of Buddha, Panini, the epics, the Puranas, etc.

Yoga Asanas / Postures / Poses-

When starting with yoga, there will be certain postures which become the foundation of your yoga practice. Anchoring your practice with these postures allows you to reap the benefits of yoga - flexibility, improved muscle strength, protection of the spine, increased blood flow, and even improved happiness. It is believed that there are 19 different types of yoga and 66 basic asanas / yoga postures. Some popular yoga postures are
Adho Mukha Shvanasana, Bhujanagasana, Anantasana, Siddhasana, Shalabhasana, Dhnurasana, Dandasan, Kapotasana, Vrischikasana, Gomukhasana, Virabbhadrasana, Parighasana, Hanumanasana, Natarajasana, Vrikshasana, Ardha Chandrasana, Trikonasana, Pincha Mayursasana, Vasistasana, Salambha Sarvangasana.

Surya Namaskar is one of the most important asanas in yoga practice and is the core of yoga. The series of 12 poses of Surya Namaskar are all linked in a Vinyasa. In yoga, we believe that the right step comes on the heels of the right thought. With the Surya Namaskar, this means that we must concentrate on the right breath, so that the alignment and breath in the following pose is correct. Worshiping or offering pranams to the Sun-God or Surya gives a sense of bliss and it also has its own deep history, spread all over the world. Surya Namaskar is the ultimate asana that strengthens the back and muscles of the body. One of the major advantages of Surya Namaskar is it’s a complete workout for the entire physical system that can be performed without any equipment.
