GAYATRI MANTRA on Copper
An ode to the Sun God from Vedic Times! India's most reverred mantra!
The beautiful Vedic prayer known as the Gayatri Mantra addresses the sun as “the one who illuminates our minds.” Gayatri Mantra is a universal prayer enshrined in the RigVeda. It is a prayer to the Sun Deity. In the mantra, the Divine (Sun deity) is praised, and then meditated upon in reverence and finally an appeal is made to awaken and strengthen the intellect, the discriminating faculty of man, as the Sun enlightens all realms (physical, mental and spiritual). The Gayatri is considered the essence of the Vedas. She bestows pure thoughts on anyone who worships Her. She is the embodiment of all Goddesses. Mother Gayatri nourishes and protects every being and channelizes our senses in the proper direction. Thus, Gayatri Mantra is a complete prayer for protection, nourishment and finally, liberation.
A basic translation of the Mantra can be given as...
Oh parmatma, the Protector, the basis of all life, Who is self-existent, Who is free from all pains and Whose contact frees the soul from all troubles, Who pervades the Universe and sustains all, the Creator and Energizer of the whole Universe, the Giver of happiness, Who is worthy of acceptance, the most excellent, Who is Pure and the Purifier of all, let us embrace that very parmatma, so that He may direct our mental faculties in the right direction. Let us meditate on that excellent glory of the divine Light (Vivifier, Sun). May he stimulate our understandings (knowledge, intellectual illumination).
